Detail

Ismaël explicitly alludes to a visual depiction of structural violence and brutality by referencing images of a sub-Saharan African refugee’s arrest during deportation. Racial discrimination persists, and violence against migrants continues to escalate; accordingly, the sculpture engages with ongoing discussions on colonization, domination, and race politics. The piece highlights the fragmentation of the detainee’s cuffed, meager forearms, while the rest of the body remains shackled and tethered.
